Glossary of Terms
Words can have many definitions. Shift defines love, fear, defenses and other terms a bit differently than the norm. Return to this page soon to read the definitions that we used in the development of Shift.
Love – We typically think of love as a romantic feeling, like the basis for Valentine’s Day with hearts, roses, and chocolates – or that feeling you have for your family and close friends. Within the context of Shift, we see love as peace, honesty, trust, gratitude, forgiveness, and open-mindedness. Some examples of what it looks like to come from love are: you’re able to accept what is and trust the process, you have a willingness to see the situation differently, and you are choosing what supports you.
Fear – We usually associate Fear with Halloween, a dark windy night, or just being frightened in general. Shift sees fear as more than just being scared. Fear can show up as hurt, upset, loss, anger, doubt, and confusion. Some examples of what it looks like to come from fear are: you can only see the negative, you are judging the present from the past or the future, and you operate from an idea of lack, loss, or not good enough.
Defenses – Defenses are what you do rather than what you are. They are simply your behavior, and although we may think our defenses protect us, they really keep us from experiencing our full potential. Defenses are what we must drop to move from fear to love.
Purpose – In a larger sense, our purpose is our reason for being. It is simply what we were meant to do. Our purpose can also change for each situation. It is up to us to get clear on our purpose for each relationship (this can be a new job or even a new roommate) and then check later on to see if relationship is still on purpose.
Give – All that we give we receive. Bill Clapp said, “You don’t know what you get back until you give.”
Shift – A change in perception.
Choice – Choice is power. At every crossroad, we all have a choice to do what supports us, or not. In every moment and in every situation, whether we believe it or not, we are at choice.
